“Do Your Part And Maybe A Little More And The Rest Will Be Taken Care Of”

The title you see above are the exact words my CEO told me a few months ago at a random drive home. Words which made so much sense.

I haven’t had the motivation to sit down and write an article over the past couple of months. Been inside my own head for months, figuring things out, finding the traits which I feel are lacking or toxic and overall been in a state of conflict with myself while also working to keep things going in a business point of view. If you look at it, it may be a good thing, but your mind tends to be in a rollercoaster ride which can leave you feeling like shit and if you’re like me, pretty hard on yourself.

The past couple of months has made me realise that the title you see above is magical. It makes so much sense and yet it happens so unconsciously. If you’re not too clear on what exactly the title entails, it’s simply how when we put in the genuine effort everything that’s suppose to happen, will happen. Notice how I used the phrase “genuine effort”? That’s mainly because effort is a matter of perspective, the little you do might seem a lot to another and if you’re lying to yourself about the effort you put in, that ain’t a trait that will help you in the long run.

You’ve heard the phrase “Work Hard and Luck Just Seems To Be In Your Favour”. It’s exactly that. It’s a strange connection when you actually think about it. You keep doing, doing and doing with no guarantee of a result but then the results start coming in and the questions pop into your head “What I did worked?”. It’s unbelievable or am I reading too deep into this? You tell me.

To bring some perspective to what I was talking about, here’s what the couple of months have been like. COVID-19 hit the business back in March and being in the education sector which tends to depend on Traditional Classes where we interact with learners directly, there was a thought that this was the end to a business model which started 10 years ago but was only available to the public a few years ago. It was probably the most uncertain time we’ve ever experienced. I’ll admit, we probably should’ve been a bit more positive towards this situation (and we certainly did not think of an online learning platform) but given how COVID-19 seem to be hitting every business drastically, it did not seem to dumb to even think about it. Economically, everything seem to be going downwards. Turns out the thinking was right because it’s August and we’ve got no idea if it’s safe to reopen the model of learning just yet. But we had to provide a service to the existing learners which brought forward a new online learning platform within a span of 24 hours. I remember my CEO calling me and telling me “convert new prospects since we will be restarting the online learning program from the beginning” and few hours later we’ve got new learners joining the online platform.

Fast forward, a couple of months later, it’s August, and we’ve got 100+ learners who have joined us online and we are working on a few things to further improve the learning process which by God’s grace will launch within the next few weeks. I don’t like to dwell on achievements too much because we as humans tend to get carried away with it but when I look back on the past couple of months, I do feel pretty good about myself.

At first, it was never an easy task to sell the online learning model because the country was on lockdown. Telemarketing wasn’t my area of expertise, I considered myself to be a Consultative Seller who gets to know each customer on a deeper level and make sure the customer’s problem is solved, so telemarketing was basically a skill I never touched. I didn’t necessarily have a choice but to adapt and learn the game of telemarketing and few months later, I look forward to waking up and taking sales calls. Sales is always uncertain but the uncertainty is what drives you to be good at it.

I remember speaking to some of the best sales guys I know and getting their advice on how I could get better at Telemarketing. Spent a few hours on LinkedIn Learning and dug deep into some research on how to improve and now I feel a lot better about Telemarketing. It’s a fun game.

Here’s my point, the R&D involved in getting better at Telemarketing, the hundreds of calls on following up with customers and the hours I spent inside my room taking calls without leaving the room, they all account for Effort. I don’t think I would’ve converted the 100+ new learners with zero marketing expenditure if I didn’t do the three things mentioned. I’m not saying it to toot my own horn but I when I looked back on the few months, it’s that effort that helps me sleep in the night a lot easier than a few months ago.

“So do your part and maybe a little more and the rest will be taken care of”

It certainly is some weird logic which makes no sense but I guess that’s how the world works. So in whatever it is that you do, put the effort in. I’m not talking about the“hustle” that every lost individual seems to talk about on Instagram even though they like to think they’re not. I’m talking about being systematic and methodical in what we do and being driven by the fear of not being good at something.

Hope this helped you.

Stay Safe! Much Love!
